How much does a water softener cost to install?
One question decides most of your quote, and it has nothing to do with the softener: does your house already have a plumbing loop?
Expect roughly $1,200 to $5,000 to install a whole-house water softener in the United States in 2026. The labour half of that is 2–8 hours at a billed rate of about $68–$98 an hour, which is what the US median plumber wage of $30.67 works out to once a shop covers burden, overhead and profit.

How to read this total. Salt-based installed runs $1,200–$3,800 and dual-tank $1,700–$5,000. The parts table below lists components sold separately — a packaged softener already contains the control valve and brine tank, so do not add those to the unit price.
The low column assumes a straightforward job with the cheapest listed equipment; the high column assumes the full parts list, the top of the labour range and the most expensive permit jurisdiction we measured. Most real quotes land in the middle.

What actually moves the price
Loop or no loop — this is the whole quote
A softener loop is a U-shaped section of pipe near the water heater, with a drain and an outlet next to it, put in when the house was built. If you have one, installation is about $250. If you do not and the plumber has to run a full line, it is $800–$3,500. Retrofitting a loop specifically is $600–$2,000. Go look at the pipes near your water heater before you call anybody.
The drain is a code requirement, not an upsell
Regeneration discharge has to go through an air gap (UPC 611.2). If there is no floor drain or standpipe within reach, that is a $200–$500 line item you cannot decline.
Capacity
24,000–32,000 grain is $600–$1,700. 48,000+ grain is $3,000–$6,000. Bigger is not better — an oversized softener regenerates less often and can channel.
Salt-free is a different product, not a cheaper softener
TAC conditioners change how scale forms; they do not remove hardness ions. If your problem is spotting on glassware, that may be fine. If it is a water test showing hardness, it is not the same thing.
Where you live
Plumber rates run $50–$80 an hour in the rural Midwest and Southeast, and $150–$200 in San Francisco, New York and Boston. That is a 2.5x spread on the same four hours.
Code requirements that cost money
These are the things an inspector will look for, and each one is a line on the invoice that a homeowner often reads as padding. Mostly it is not.
- NSF/ANSI 44 certification — Residential softeners must be certified and tested by NSF, WQA or IAPMO (UPC 611.1). An uncertified unit is not code legal. Source.
- Air gap on the discharge — Regeneration discharge must pass through an air gap per UPC Table 603.3.1 or a listed air gap device (UPC 611.2). Source.
- Backflow protection — Water treatment equipment needs an approved backflow prevention device (UPC 603.1). Source.
- Lead content — Wetted surfaces limited to a 0.25% weighted average (UPC 604.2). Source.

What we could not verify
We publish this list because a cost page that never admits a gap is not telling you the truth.
- Municipal permit fee schedules for softeners — we verified an aggregate $50–$200 range but no individual city fee table we could open.
- How common pre-plumbed loops actually are by region — sources describe them as common in new construction and in the Southwest, but nobody publishes a percentage.

We do not use RSMeans or Craftsman cost data. Their licences forbid building a database from them, so every number here traces to a public source or a public listing you can open yourself.
