How we make money
Right now: we do not
As of August 6, 2026 this site has no advertising, no affiliate relationships, no sponsors and no paid placements. Nothing on it earns us anything. The notice at the top of every page says so and will change the day that stops being true.
The plan
Three things, in this order:
- Display advertising. Ordinary ad slots, clearly ads.
- Referrals to contractors and to software vendors. If you ask to be connected to someone through this site, the company on the other end may pay us. Any such link or form will be labelled where it appears.
- Paid accuracy listings. A vendor can pay us to re-check their pricing more often and carry a “verified” date. They are paying for frequency and for being told when we find something, not for a better write-up.
What money will not buy
- A better position in any table. Our tables are ordered by data — wage, price, alphabetical — never by who pays.
- Removal of an unflattering fact. If a vendor's terms restrict who can sign up, or their price went up, that stays on the page.
- Any change to a wage figure. Those come from BLS and we do not touch them.
- A gate on the data. Everything stays free and readable without an account. This is the commitment we would be most tempted to break, so we are writing it down.
No ad network on the cost tables
Where we do run advertising, it will not sit inside a data table or between a number and its source. A price and its provenance should be readable in one glance.
